Lana & Garrett | Wedding Photographer Richmond VA

I’m counting down the days until Lana & Garrett’s wedding at The Dominion Club this fall! Until then, I get to relive one of my favorite engagement sessions to date - one filled with soft spring light, blooming cherry blossoms, sweet giggles, and so much love.

Lana and Garrett found me through her cousins, Fred and Cameron - one of my sweet wedding couples from a few years ago (still makes my heart so happy when my couples send family my way!). From the first moment we connected, I could tell Lana and Garrett were super down-to-earth, intentional, and all about the details. They actually met in high school - same class! - but didn’t start dating until years later, thanks to a dating app. Life has a funny way of bringing people back together, right?

They love cooking together, spending time outdoors, and you can feel how much they truly care for each other in every little interaction. She loves sweets (a girl after my own heart), and their calm, kind energy made this session so peaceful and full of joy.

Choosing Locations With Meaning in Richmond VA

When they told me they wanted to shoot at Maymont, I was so in. That’s where Garrett proposed, so it was only fitting that we started their engagement session right there, in the Italian Garden where it all began. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, giving everything the dreamiest, most romantic vibe.

Lana wore a soft pink dress that matched perfectly with the gentle tones of the garden.

Later, we wrapped up at the Virginia Capitol, where Lana changed into a classic white & blue dress for a touch of elegance. The clean architecture created a timeless, elevated look - proof that you can do both: romantic and chic, all in one session.

Tips for Future Brides: Making Your Engagement Session Feel Like “You”

I always tell my couples: don’t overthink it. The best engagement sessions happen when you choose places and outfits that reflect your relationship and energy.

Here’s what worked beautifully for Lana & Garrett (and what I recommend to all my couples):

  • Pick locations with personal meaning. Whether it’s where you got engaged or a spot you love visiting together, it adds so much depth to your photos.

  • Coordinate your outfits with the environment. Lana’s pink dress made the cherry blossoms pop even more, and her blue dress at the Capitol brought a sophisticated, timeless touch.

  • Trust the process. You don’t need to pose perfectly. Some of my favorite moments were when they were just laughing, talking, or walking hand-in-hand.

Lana & Garrett’s love is the quiet, steady, comforting kind - the kind that makes you smile just watching them. As a wedding photographer in Richmond VA, I’m beyond honored to photograph their wedding day this fall, and I already know it’s going to be just as beautiful as their engagement session.
