Barbara and Gustavo’s private residence wedding day in Virginia was wrapped in answered prayers.
The forecast had been calling for rain all week long and it was not just a little “maybe it will pass” kind of rain… A full 100% chance of rain.
And when your wedding day is planned outdoors, in the backyard of a private residence, with the ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner all happening near the pool… that forecast can make your heart sink a little.
But somehow, after so many prayers, not one single drop came down. Instead, the sun showed up, the backyard was full of people they love, and Barbara and Gustavo got to have the spring wedding they had been dreaming of.
Their ceremony took place at a beautiful private residence in Sandy Hook, Virginia, surrounded by around 70 of their closest family and friends. It was intimate, elegant, and full of details that made the whole day feel so personal to them.
A Wedding Day That Felt Like Them
Barbara and Gustavo’s story started in such a normal, everyday place… Whole Foods. That was their first date and I love that so much because sometimes the best stories start in the middle of real life, in a place you have probably walked into a hundred times before, and somehow that simple beginning becomes the start of everything.
A year later, after adventures together, trips, and a proposal in Thailand, they were saying their vows with their golden retriever, Fry, right there as part of the day. And Fry deserves his own paragraph…
Actually, several.
Because he was part of the wedding.
Barbara told me that Fry had been extra close to her all week, almost like he knew something special was about to happen. And on the wedding day, that little feeling made so much sense. He stayed close, he showed up in so many moments, and he even carried their rings.
I mean…
Could it be any sweeter?
Some of my favorite photos from the whole day are of Barbara, Gustavo, and Fry together.
Barbara and Gustavo’s wedding day took place around the home and backyard. The ceremony was outside, and after that, the space around the pool was transformed for cocktail hour and dinner. It was fun and celebratory during cocktail hour, with a champagne tower, a Polaroid guestbook station, and a vintage bathtub drink station that had so much personality. And then, as the evening moved into dinner, the same space became warm and romantic with candlelight, flowers, and that beautiful poolside atmosphere.
It was such a good reminder that a wedding venue does not always have to be a traditional venue to feel elevated. Sometimes a private residence can create the most meaningful setting because there is already a connection to the place. And when you add thoughtful styling, good flow, beautiful florals, and the right photography timeline, it can feel incredibly special.
Barbara and Gustavo chose muted romantic tones for their wedding colors: sage and olive greens, dusty rose, mauve, deep wine, ivory, champagne, soft gold, and black accents. The whole palette felt soft and rich at the same time. It worked so beautifully with the spring season, the outdoor setting, the greenery around the property, and the candlelit reception details.
It had a little bit of vintage charm.
A little bit of editorial drama.
And a lot of warmth.
Bride & Groom: Special Notes from the Wedding Day
One of the things I will remember most about Barbara and Gustavo is how easy they were to be around. They were laid back in the best way. They cared about the photos, of course, but they also cared about actually enjoying the day.
And I think future brides need to hear this:
Your wedding photos are always better when you let yourself be present. When you trust the timeline. When you let the little imperfect things become part of the story. When you laugh, move, hug your people, hold your dog, pour the champagne, and enjoy what is happening around you. Barbara and Gustavo did that so naturally.
They wanted a mix of documentary-style moments and a few more editorial, moody flash photos at night — especially around the cake and champagne tower — and that combination fit their day so well.
Their Silver Collection included 5 hours of wedding photography coverage, which worked really well because everything was happening in one location. There was no travel time between getting ready, ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, and reception, so we were able to use the time intentionally.
Before the wedding day, I helped create a photography timeline so everyone knew what to expect. And because of that, the day flowed smoothly. Especially with shorter coverage, having a good timeline makes all the difference.
The Champagne Tower, the Vintage Bathtub, and All the Little Details
As a Richmond wedding photographer, I love when a wedding day feels personal to the couple from beginning to end. And Barbara and Gustavo’s wedding had so many details! The champagne tower was such a fun moment during cocktail hour. There is something about a champagne tower that instantly adds movement and celebration to a gallery. It gives people something to gather around, something to react to, and something that feels a little glamorous without being too formal.
The vintage bathtub drink station was another favorite detail. It was creative, charming, and so perfect for a backyard wedding.
I love when couples include details that do not feel like they were chosen just because they saw them online. This felt like it belonged there. It added personality to the space and made the whole cocktail hour feel more relaxed and fun.
The Polaroid guestbook station was also such a sweet touch. I always love guestbook ideas that invite people to actually participate. It becomes part of the night.
And then there was the candlelit dinner. By the time guests sat down, the space had shifted into this warm, romantic atmosphere by the pool. The florals, the soft colors, the candlelight, and the open-air setting all came together so beautifully.
My Favorite Part of the Day
I keep trying to choose one favorite moment from Barbara and Gustavo’s wedding, and I honestly do not think I can. The fact that it did not rain when the forecast said it absolutely would. Fry carrying the rings. Barbara and Gustavo’s portraits by the pool. The champagne tower. The candlelit dinner. The way their guests seemed so happy to be there. The editorial flash photos at night.
All of it.
But if I had to choose the images I know I will remember for a long time, it would be the portraits of Barbara, Gustavo, and Fry.
There was something about those photos that felt so true to them. Just the three of them together on one of the most meaningful days of their lives.
And to me, that is what wedding photography should do. It should bring you back not only to what your wedding looked like, but to what it felt like.
