Maria & Luke | Omni Richmond Hotel

Maria and Luke’s wedding day was one of those days that was beautiful in every way, but what I keep thinking about the most is not just the flowers, the dress, the music, or the venue.

It was the people.

Their families were so present, so emotional, and so happy to be there. Everyone was kind, everyone was excited, and everywhere I looked there was someone hugging, tearing up, laughing, dancing, or making sure Maria and Luke were having the best day.

Maria and Luke got married in Richmond, Virginia, with their ceremony at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church and their reception at the Omni Richmond Hotel. Their wedding weekend started the night before with rehearsal dinner coverage at Julep’s in downtown Richmond, and then the wedding day started at the Omni, continued with the most beautiful ceremony, took us to the Virginia Capitol for portraits, and ended with a dance floor that nobody wanted to leave.

And honestly…

I get it.

I did not want to leave either.

A Love Story That Started in Barcelona

Maria is from Richmond, Luke is from North Carolina, and somehow, they met in Barcelona.

I mean…What are the odds?

They were both there for a teacher training trip, and so many little things had to happen for them to end up in the same place at the same time. A winery outing. A lunch with wine pairings. A table where teachers were placed together. Luke there with his sister. Maria there too. A conversation that kept going. And from there, the story started.

Sometimes love starts in the most unexpected place, in a city far away from home, when your life is not even looking for that exact moment. But then it happens.

And a year and a half later, there they were, getting married in Richmond, surrounded by around 300 people who love them so much.

Maria is the kind of person who feels like sunshine. Positive, happy, and able to talk to anyone like she has known them forever (we chatted for over an hour during our first in person meeting and I loved it!!). She says she can talk to a brick wall and I absolutely LOVE this about her.

Maria described Luke as smart, funny, and a guy that has that dry sense of humor that makes people laugh before they even realize they are laughing. Together, they love traveling, family weekends, walks, the beach, the mountains, wineries, kayaking, food, and all the beautiful ordinary things that make a life feel full.

And their wedding day felt exactly like that.

Full.

A Greek Orthodox Wedding Ceremony in Richmond, Virginia

Maria and Luke’s ceremony at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church was one of the most meaningful ceremonies I have ever photographed.

There were five priests participating in the ceremony, and one of them was Maria’s dad, Father Bill.

And that alone made the whole thing feel so emotional.

I had already spoken with Father Bill before the wedding, and he was so kind in helping us understand the church, the ceremony flow, and where we could be during the service. But nothing could have prepared me for seeing him watch his daughter walk into the church.

Maria’s entrance was one of those moments where everyone feels it at the same time.

She was tearing up.

Her dad was tearing up.

People in the church were tearing up.

And then later, when I was editing those images, I was crying too.

There was something about seeing her walk in, surrounded by everyone she loves, with her father taking her to the altar, not only as her dad but also as one of the priests in the ceremony, that made the moment feel almost impossible to explain.

The church itself was beautiful to photograph. I loved the natural light coming through the stained glass, the arched doors outside, the traditional details at the altar, the silver tray with the crowns and rings, and all the movement and meaning of the Greek Orthodox ceremony. It was not a ceremony you simply watch. It was a ceremony you feel.

And it was such an honor to photograph it.

A Wedding Day Full of Family and Meaning

Maria and Luke’s wedding day had a formal and joyful feeling, with soft powder blue bridesmaids dresses, black attire for the groomsmen, and colorful florals by Vogue Flowers. The whole day felt classic but full of life, which made so much sense for them.

Everyone got ready at the Omni Richmond Hotel before heading to the church, and from the very beginning, everyone was so kind. The families, the wedding party, the vendors, the guests… everyone was friendly, helpful, and happy to be there.

And when a wedding day has that kind of energy, it changes everything.

Maria looked absolutely beautiful in her dress from Annalise Bridal, with makeup by Kirsty Wingfield with Richmond Makeup Artist, LLC and hair by Derek Hedgepeth with Farm House Salon. The bridesmaids in blue looked so elegant beside her, and the colorful flowers brought such a happy feeling to the day.

But what I loved most was that the whole day carried meaning.

Maria dedicated her bouquet to her mom, and that was such a beautiful moment. I saw people around them tearing up with joy, and it felt like one of those moments that did not need to be loud to be powerful.

Luke also gave an incredibly touching speech in memory of his late father. He read a poem he had written, and it was one of the most beautiful reminders of how important it is to remember the people who shaped us. Everyone cried again, and honestly, how could they not?

And then Cam, Luke’s son and best man, gave a speech that made everyone laugh out loud.

Such a fun kid!

Wedding Portraits at the Virginia Capitol

After the ceremony, James Limousine took us to the Virginia Capitol for bride and groom portraits, and not even the heat could hold us back.

And listen…

It was hot.

But Maria and Luke were such good sports, and I am so glad we made that stop because their portraits at the Virginia Capitol felt so Richmond and so timeless. We had a quick ride from the Omni, a little bit of time for portraits, and somehow even in the middle of a full wedding day, it gave them a few minutes to just be together.

That is something I always love about bride and groom portraits. Yes, we are taking photos, but it is also one of the only times during the day when the couple gets to pause, breathe, and look at each other like, “We are married.”

And for Maria and Luke, that little pause was so worth it.

As a Richmond wedding photographer, I love when couples make space in the timeline for a location that feels connected to the city. The Virginia Capitol gave us that classic downtown Richmond feeling before heading back to the Omni for the reception.

A Wedding Reception at the Omni Richmond Hotel

Maria and Luke’s reception took place in the James River Ballroom at the Omni Richmond Hotel, and with around 300 guests, the room was full of energy from the moment people walked in.

The Omni was such a great space for a wedding this size. I loved the ballroom, the flow, and especially the dance floor because this crowd came ready to celebrate.

And the vendor team made the day feel so smooth.

Mary Jane Spagnolo with Special Touch Events was so sweet and helpful, and the whole day felt easier because of her. The staff at the Omni was wonderful. Paul Hairston and his video team were great to work with. Vogue Flowers made everything feel colorful and beautiful. Ukrop’s made the cake. The Greek pastries were made by the bride’s mom, and the southern pastries were made by the groom’s mom, which I thought was such a sweet personal touch.

And then there was the music.

DJ Omega da Greek brought the Greek music, and The Gentlemen and their Lady were absolutely phenomenal.

Like…

PHENOMENAL.

These guys know how to entertain. Nobody stayed at their tables while they were playing, and Andre and I already said we cannot wait to watch them again. The dance floor was full, the energy was unreal, and it felt like the perfect ending to such a full day.

The Greek Dance, the Money Dance, and a Dance Floor I Will Not Forget

The Greek dancing was one of my favorite parts of the entire wedding day.

Everyone gathering, moving together, laughing, celebrating, and just fully participating in the moment. It does not feel like people are watching a reception happen. It feels like everyone is part of it.

Maria and Luke also had the traditional Greek money dance, and it was so much fun to photograph. People were surrounding them, throwing money, laughing, cheering, and celebrating them.

I love wedding receptions when people let go and enjoy the night.

And this reception had that from beginning to end.

The band, the Greek music, the family traditions, the speeches, the dancing, the people who traveled and gathered to celebrate them… everything came together in such a beautiful way.

Two Days of Wedding Photography Coverage in Richmond

Maria and Luke booked the Heirloom Collection, which included two days of wedding photography coverage between their rehearsal dinner and wedding day.

Their rehearsal dinner at Julep’s in downtown Richmond was such a sweet beginning to the weekend. It was the perfect place for good food, family, and everyone gathering before the full wedding day.

And then on the wedding day, we photographed everything from the beginning of the day until the end of the night. Getting ready at the Omni, first look, family formals, the Greek Orthodox ceremony, portraits at the Virginia Capitol, cocktail hour, reception details, speeches, dances, Greek traditions, and the dance floor.

For a wedding this full, a custom photography timeline was so important. I created a timeline so everyone knew how the day would unfold, and that made it possible to photograph so many important moments.

This is why I always tell my couples that the timeline matters. It does not take away from the emotion of the day. It protects it.

It gives us space for the moments that matter.

My Favorite Part of the Day

I keep trying to choose one favorite moment from Maria and Luke’s wedding day, and I honestly cannot.

Every time I saw her father crying, I felt it.

Maria’s entrance into the church.

The Greek Orthodox ceremony.

The bouquet dedication to her mom.

Luke’s speech in memory of his father.

Cam making everyone laugh.

The Greek dancing.

The band.

The fact that not even the heat stopped us from taking portraits at the Virginia Capitol.

All of it.

But maybe my favorite thing was the way the whole day made room for both joy and remembrance. It was not only a party, even though it was definitely a party. It was also a day full of meaning. A day that honored family, faith, love, and the people who were there in person and in memory.

And to me, that is what wedding photography should do.

It should bring you back to how everything felt.

Maria and Luke, thank you so much for trusting me, Andre, and Carol to photograph your wedding weekend.

Your wedding was beautiful!

I hope these photos always bring you back to the feeling of walking into that church, dancing with everyone you love, remembering the people who shaped you, and beginning your marriage surrounded by so much joy.
