When people ask me what my favorite sessions to photograph are, I always say the ones that make me smile behind the camera and at my desk while editing. Gender reveal sessions? They’re right at the top of that list. As a Richmond photographer, I get to see so many sweet moments, but there’s something extra special about watching two people celebrate this little life that’s about to change everything.

A gender reveal session is all about the giggles, the “oh my goodness!” faces, the hugs that last a little longer. Sometimes couples find out the gender right there in front of my camera.

One session I’ll never forget is Lili and Donald’s. Their love and care for each other? You can see it from a mile away.

They brought so much laughter and energy to their session... the kind that makes you feel lighter just being around them. While they were posing and soaking up the moment, I was quietly making my mental notes (like I always do): the way they held each other’s hands, how easy they laughed while walking, the giggles while “kissing but not kissing.” Little things that mean so much later on.

Their baby boy, who’s going to be soooo loved, is stepping into the world with the sweetest mom and an affectionate dad whose sense of humor makes everyone around them smile. They told me they hope I’ll be their “forever photographer.” I hope so too. I’d happily keep gathering these sweet memories for them, year after year.

If you’re in this season of life, first of all, congratulations! Seriously. I know how fast pregnancy can fly by, and how special it is to have photos that take you right back to these first moments of “I wonder who they’ll be.”

If you’re planning a gender reveal, here are a few things I always share:

• Pick a spot that feels good to you... maybe your favorite park or your backyard.

• Decide how you want the big moment to look... confetti, smoke, cake? It’s all fun.

• Wear something comfy but special... neutrals always photograph beautifully.

• And mostly... just be you. Laugh, squeeze each other, happy cry. I’ll handle the rest.

One of my biggest hopes as a Richmond photographer is that the families I work with feel seen and loved in their photos.
