On a beautiful spring morning in Richmond, I had the joy of photographing Melissa and Joseph as they await the arrival of their baby boy, Ezekiel. This maternity session at Maymont Park was a beautiful blend of peacefulness, laughter, and a whole lot of love. I truly believe maternity sessions should reflect the heart of your family – the bump, the anticipation, the connection, and the joy that already surrounds your little one.

Melissa and Joseph chose Maymont Park for its soft green backdrops, blooming trees, and open spaces. We began their session in front of the elegant white fountain, a classic Maymont spot that feels timeless and romantic. The light was dreamy, and the morning stillness gave them space to simply be together.

If you’re envisioning a maternity session with nature’s beauty front and center, Maymont offers variety: manicured gardens, open fields, shaded paths, and yes – that magical Virginia spring bloom.

Outfits are a huge part of setting the tone for your session, and Melissa absolutely nailed it. Her first look featured a flowing white dress with soft blue and green florals – just perfect for a spring garden setting. Joseph’s light shirt and jeans kept things simple and timeless.

For their second outfit, they both changed into sleek, all-black looks. This added variety to their gallery and brought a modern, editorial vibe to the blooming trees behind them – showing just how versatile a Maymont session can be.

Planning Tip: Choose two outfits – one soft and romantic, and one a little more bold or minimal. It adds dimension to your session and gives you more variety when printing or sharing your images.

As one of Richmond Virginia photographers, my approach to maternity photography is rooted in connection. I guide you through poses, but I also encourage those in-between moments: walking hand in hand, sharing a laugh, or placing your hands over the baby bump and simply soaking it all in.

Melissa and Joseph brought such tenderness and lighthearted joy to this session. It was so clear that Baby Ezekiel is already so loved.

If you’re bringing little ones, I always plan a few games or prompts to keep them engaged. And if it’s just the two of you, we’ll take the time to let the session flow naturally.

Melissa and Joseph, thank you for letting me capture this sweet season. I cannot wait to see how baby Ezekiel changes your world.
