Spring Richmond Engagement Photos at VMFA and Libby Hill Park

By the time we arrived at Libby Hill Park, Sallie & Anthony were already pros in front of the camera.
Not because they came to their engagement session knowing exactly what to do, but because we had spent the first part of the evening laughing, trying a few poses, walking around the VMFA, and getting comfortable with the whole experience together.
Engagement sessions are all about giving my couples the chance to see that being photographed can actually be fun.
And Sallie & Anthony made this session SO much fun.
We started their spring engagement photos at the VMFA, where the architecture, greenery, and soft evening light gave us the prettiest backdrop. The VMFA is always such a great choice for couples who want their photos to feel a little more elegant, but still want enough space to walk around, laugh, and keep everything relaxed.
We talked about their wedding plans, practiced a few poses they will probably see again next year, and had so much fun creating photos that still felt natural to them.
By the time we left the VMFA and headed to Libby Hill Park, they were completely comfortable.
And then Richmond gave us the most beautiful sunset.
The light over the city was incredible, the sky kept getting prettier, and it felt like the perfect way to end their engagement session. We photographed them with the Richmond skyline behind them, walked around the park, and enjoyed those last few minutes of golden light before the sun disappeared. But first, they popped a champagne!
I could not have asked for a better evening for them.
Sallie & Anthony are getting married at The Dominion Club next year, and after spending this engagement session with them, I already know their wedding day is going to be one to remember.
I am so excited to go back to The Dominion Club, work with the amazing team at the venue again, and celebrate with this sweet couple.
Sallie & Anthony, thank you for making this evening so much fun. I cannot wait to see you both become husband and wife!
Why the VMFA and Libby Hill Park Are Beautiful for Richmond Engagement Photos
The VMFA and Libby Hill Park are two of my favorite Richmond engagement photo locations because they give couples two completely different looks in one session.
The VMFA has a more timeless and elegant feeling, with beautiful architecture, clean backgrounds, and greenery throughout the property. Libby Hill Park feels more relaxed and romantic, especially close to sunset when you can see the Richmond skyline in the background.
For couples who want variety in their engagement gallery, these two locations work beautifully together without requiring too much driving between them.
Do Engagement Sessions Help Before the Wedding Day?
Absolutely.
Most couples tell me they are nervous about being photographed, and I completely understand. You are not expected to arrive at your engagement session knowing how to pose or what to do with your hands.
That is why I guide my couples throughout the whole session.
During Sallie & Anthony’s engagement photos, we practiced a few poses and movements that we may use again on their wedding day. By the end of the evening, everything felt more natural, and they knew exactly what to expect from me.
When their Dominion Club wedding arrives next year, we will already have that connection, and they will be able to enjoy their portraits without feeling like the camera is something new.
Planning Engagement Photos in Richmond?
Richmond has so many beautiful places for engagement photos, but the best location is always the one that feels right for you as a couple.
Some couples love the elegant look of the VMFA. Others want the city views and sunset light at Libby Hill Park. Some want gardens, historic buildings, or a place that is already meaningful to their relationship.
As a Richmond wedding photographer, I help my couples choose locations that fit their style and give them a gallery that feels personal to their story.
