Maymont Park Family Photos | The Stewart Family Session

There is something I do not think I will ever grow tired of, and that is sharing my clients’ stories.
Not only how we met, but the little things too — what they are like together, what they tell me during their session, and the feeling I carry with me after spending time documenting a season they will never get back.
The Stewarts’ session was one of those that stayed with me.
It was special for more than one reason. First, because they came to me through one of my dear clients — and if you know me, you know how much referrals like that mean to me. Margarette has my heart forever. 🤍
But beyond that, the Stewarts are simply the kind of family that leaves a mark on you.
Sweet, grounded, full of grace… the kind of family where you can tell very quickly that love lives there.
The way they cared for their two precious girls, the way they interacted with one another, and the way their marriage seemed to quietly hold everything together — it was beautiful to witness. Not loud. Not performative. Just steady, genuine, and full of light.
And I think that is one of the things I loved most about photographing them during their family session in Richmond, Virginia.
Nothing about their session needed to be forced. Their connection spoke for itself. Their girls were such a joy, and there was this softness to the whole evening that made everything feel easy and meaningful all at once.
Maymont Park was the perfect setting for that.
It gave us room to move, beautiful light, and that timeless Richmond charm that always photographs so well without ever taking the attention away from what matters most — the people in front of me. It is one of those locations I love recommending when families ask about the best places for family photos in Richmond.
Also — I have to say it — at some point during the session I realized Emily looks so much like Amanda Seyfried, and once I saw it, I could not unsee it. Haha!!
I always leave photo sessions carrying something with me.
Sometimes it is a phrase someone said. Sometimes it is the way the light looked. Sometimes it is simply the feeling of having witnessed something beautiful and true.
With the Stewarts, I left feeling like I had known them for years.
And isn’t that such a special thing?
To meet someone for the first time, and yet leave feeling familiar with their joy, their love, and the way they hold each other so closely.
That was this session for me.
Stewart family — thank you for trusting me with this season. It was such a gift to photograph your family. 🤍
Why I love family sessions like this
As a Richmond portrait photographer, I love sessions that feel like people, not performances.
Of course I want your images to be beautiful. Of course I care about the light, the location, the tones, and all the little details that make a gallery feel timeless.
But more than anything, I want your photos to feel like you.
That is what makes family photos matter years from now.
Not perfection.
Not everyone looking at the camera at the exact same time.
But the way your daughter reached for your hand.
The way your family laughed in between poses.
The way your marriage still shows up in the quietest moments.
Those are the things worth remembering.
That is also why I care so much about creating natural family photos that feel honest to this season of life, instead of overly posed images that do not really reflect your family.
Why Maymont Park is such a beautiful location for family photos
If you are dreaming of family photos that feel natural and timeless, Maymont Park is such a beautiful choice.
It has:
Room to move
Open space helps sessions feel less stiff and gives families more freedom to interact naturally.
A timeless Richmond feel
Maymont has so much character, but it still lets connection take center stage.
Soft, beautiful backdrops
The gardens, paths, trees, and open areas all photograph beautifully in a way that feels classic and effortless.
A peaceful atmosphere
There is something about Maymont that always makes sessions feel calm, relaxed, and easy.
And that kind of setting makes such a difference, especially when little ones are involved. If you are still deciding on a location, I always recommend exploring Richmond portrait session locations that give your family room to breathe and move naturally.
What makes family photos feel natural
The family sessions I love most are always the ones where connection gets to take center stage.
That usually means:
Choosing a location that gives you room to breathe
A simple outdoor setting with soft light and open space always helps a session feel more natural.
Wearing something that feels like you
You never need to look like someone else for your session to be beautiful. Timeless and comfortable always wins.
Letting go of the pressure for everything to be perfect
Some of the best images happen in the in-between moments.
Trusting the process
You do not have to show up knowing exactly what to do. I guide my families every step of the way so the session feels easy and natural. If that part feels overwhelming, I always help with portrait session planning so you do not have to figure it all out on your own.
What to wear for family photos at Maymont Park
For a family session like this, I usually recommend keeping things simple and timeless.
A few things that photograph beautifully:
Soft, neutral tones
Cream, beige, soft blues, muted greens, dusty rose, warm browns, and other earthy colors always work so well.
Pieces with texture
Knits, linen, soft cotton, or dresses with movement add so much without trying too hard.
Outfits that coordinate instead of match
You want everyone to feel connected, but not identical.
Comfortable pieces for little ones
If the girls are comfortable, the whole session tends to flow so much better.
The goal is always for your family to look like yourselves on your very best day — natural, connected, and timeless. If you are in the middle of choosing outfits, I always suggest starting with my tips on what to wear for family photos and building from there.

Do you help with outfits?
Yes, always. I help with outfit guidance so everything feels cohesive and photographs beautifully without feeling overdone.
