Spoiler alert: Baby Lila is already here, has already had her first photoshoot, and she is the most precious baby girl.
But first, let’s go back a few weeks to when I photographed her parents during their maternity session at Richmond Battlefield in Richmond, Virginia. As a Richmond maternity photographer, I love sessions like this…
If I had to choose one feeling to describe every moment around these two, it would be: joy.
Sara and Wesley are such a sweet couple and truly the perfect match for one another. Sara has the most contagious laugh, and Wesley is absolutely in love with her — the kind of love that shows up in the quiet moments, not just the big ones.
We photographed their maternity session on a very cold afternoon, but with the most beautiful sunset. And Richmond Battlefield gave us exactly what I love most for storytelling: open space, soft winter textures, and that calm feeling that lets connection take center stage. I couldn’t be happier with the earthy tones and the way every photo felt like it was telling a chapter of their story — not just documenting a bump.
Could I wait to meet baby Lila? Absolutely not.
I met her just a couple of weeks later during our newborn session at the studio. If you’re looking for a Richmond newborn photographer, I’d love to help you plan that next chapter too.
Sara and Wesley, thank you for letting me be “Aunt Ma” to baby Lila.
To be continued soon… 🤍
Why Richmond Battlefield is such a beautiful location for maternity photos
If you want maternity photos that feel timeless and natural, Richmond Battlefield is such a good choice. It has:
space to move (so you don’t feel “posed”)
neutral, earthy scenery that photographs beautifully in winter
a quiet, peaceful vibe that matches intimate, joy-filled sessions
And when sunset shows up? It’s magic.
What to wear for a winter maternity session at Richmond Battlefield
This is the simple formula that always photographs beautifully in a location like this:
Neutral or earthy tones (cream, camel, soft brown, muted green, dusty rose)
Layers that look intentional (a long coat, wrap, or knit cardigan you’d wear anyway)
Comfortable shoes you can walk in (closed-toe is usually best in winter)
One texture piece (knit, wool, ribbed fabric) for that cozy, editorial look
Warmth matters because it keeps your shoulders relaxed and your hands comfortable — and that makes the photos feel natural.
Frequently Asked Questions About Maternity Sessions
When should I book maternity photos?
Usually between 28–34 weeks, when the bump is beautifully defined but you still feel comfortable moving.
What if it’s cold on session day?
We plan layers, keep the session moving, and I guide you into poses that feel natural and warm — no stiff fingers, no tense shoulders.
Can I book maternity + newborn together?
Yes — and it’s one of my favorite ways to photograph a family story from the very beginning.
Sara & Wesley, thank you for letting me tell this part of your story — and for letting me be an “Aunt” to baby Lila.
