Melinda's Smash the Cake | Richmond Photographer
There are some stories I get to tell with my camera that go far beyond the frame – stories that stay with me, and families that become a part of mine. Sweet Melinda’s smash the cake session was one of those moments.
As a Richmond photographer, I have the joy of witnessing so many milestones – and Melinda’s first birthday was extra special for me. I’ve been walking alongside this family for years now. I still remember the excitement when her parents called me to photograph their wedding… and then, the honor of being the first person to know Melinda’s gender at their gender reveal party. (Yes, I had to keep the secret for days!) From that moment on, this little girl has had a piece of my heart.
To now see her turning one – sitting in my studio with her big eyes and cheeky smile, covered in frosting and surrounded by her family – it’s something I’ll never take for granted. Being chosen again and again to capture these chapters is the greatest gift.
For Melinda’s smash the cake session, we kept the setup soft, playful, and pink — just like her. Creamy pastels, a delicate farm set up, and a custom cake that she had no hesitation smashing into (seriously, she went for it!). She lit up the room, giggled her way through every frame, and gave us the most perfect gallery full of joy and messy, sugary sweetness.
One-year sessions are a celebration of a family’s journey. The late nights, the first steps, the growing love. And photographing these moments in my studio here in Richmond is one of my favorite parts of being a photographer.
