Cake smash sessions are always SO much fun, and this one simply had to be shared. As a Richmond, VA wedding and family photographer, I have the joy of capturing incredible milestones like these in the studio. Let me tell you, it’s one of the most enjoyable sessions I photograph! The children are so excited (most of the time, haha), and their parents are so proud to see them celebrate their first birthday.
Arthur’s session was exactly as I described. He is such a happy child, full of life and smiles that brighten everyone’s day. We began the session with family photos (before the mess), then moved on to the cake smash. I love incorporating both sessions into one so that everyone in the family gets to have pictures with the little one too!

A cake smash session is such a special photoshoot where your baby gets to explore, play with, and enjoy a cake, all while I capture those candid, messy, and utterly adorable moments. It’s a fun and playful way to celebrate their first birthday, resulting in photographs that showcase their emerging personality and curiosity.
Planning Your Cake Smash Session
1. Theme Selection: Choosing a theme personalizes the session and makes it even more special. Whether it’s a favorite character, color scheme, or a simple, elegant setup, the theme sets the tone for the photos. There are so many DIY options if you want to do something unique.
2. Cake Choice: Opt for a cake that’s not only beautiful but also baby-friendly. Soft cakes with light-colored frosting work best, as they’re easy for little hands to dig into and minimize staining.
3. Outfit Selection: Select outfits that align with the theme and are comfortable for your baby. Keep in mind that things might get messy, so choose attire that’s okay to get a bit of frosting on.
4. Timing: Schedule the session at a time when your baby is usually happiest, often after a nap and a meal.
What to Expect During the Session
The session typically starts with clean portraits of your baby in their special outfit and a quick family session. Then, we introduce the cake and let the fun begin! Some babies dive right in, while others take a more cautious approach. There’s no right or wrong way—it’s all about capturing your child’s reactions.
