Ben's Newborn Photography Session | Richmond Photographer
A few months ago, I had the joy of photographing the iconic snow gender reveal with Thais and Aleff, and it quickly became one of the most loved sessions on my Instagram page. Soon after, we celebrated their growing family with a gorgeous maternity session at the studio. And now, the sweetest new chapter has begun: welcoming baby Ben with an in-home lifestyle newborn session.
As a Richmond photographer, there is nothing I love more than documenting a family’s journey through these milestones. Every session builds on the last.
Studio portraits are beautiful, but there’s something incredibly meaningful about capturing a newborn in their own home. Your baby’s nursery, the cozy spots you spend your mornings rocking them, and even the way the sunlight comes through your windows... all of these create images that are authentic to your family’s story.
Lifestyle newborn sessions also allow everyone to feel more relaxed. There’s no need to pack up the diaper bag, no rush out the door, your baby gets to stay in the environment where they’re most comfortable. This is especially wonderful for parents who want photos that feel intimate, natural, and timeless.
When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
One of the questions I get asked most often is: “When should we book our newborn photos?”
I recommend reaching out before your baby is born to secure a spot on my calendar, usually during your second trimester. If I'm photographing your maternity session, we will set a tentative time frame around your due date, and then finalize the actual session once your little one arrives.
For lifestyle sessions, I typically suggest photographing newborns within the first 2–3 weeks of life. Babies are still in that sweet, sleepy stage, and parents are in the middle of soaking up all the newness... it’s the perfect window!
Also, because these sessions are done in your home, natural light plays a huge role in how the photos turn out. As your Richmond photographer, I always take into account the layout of your home and which rooms we’ll be using (the nursery, master bedroom, or living room are usually favorites).
Here’s what I recommend:
Morning light (around 10 AM to noon) is often the softest and most flattering indoors. This time works beautifully if your home has big windows that let in direct sunlight.
Late afternoon can also be lovely if your home faces west and fills with golden light later in the day.
We’ll choose the time together after I get a sense of how your home is lit and when your family feels most at ease.
Don’t worry if your house doesn’t get tons of natural light! I’ve worked in all kinds of lighting situations and know how to make it beautiful.
Tiny Details You’ll Want to Remember
Things I always make sure to capture during newborn sessions:
The nursery and the special touches you’ve added.
Tiny hands and feet (because they grow so fast).
Snuggles with mom and dad, and sometimes even with furry siblings.
Natural moments like feeding, rocking, or soothing... because these are the memories you’ll look back on the most.
Baby Ben gave me all of this and more. He was so calm during his session, and being able to photograph him in his family’s home made the entire gallery feel heartfelt and real.
Thais and Aleff, thank you for once again trusting me to capture your story, from that snowy (AND COLD!) day to the joy of welcoming your son. It’s such a blessing to be welcomed into your lives and now to photograph baby Ben as part of your family’s legacy.
